The Right Side of History

Anna had her first real job. It wasn’t her first job ever, but it was the first job where she would get paid to do what she went to college for: Marketing.

Anna worked for a startup. Her company developed an app. They were, at first, very exclusive. You had to be invited to download the app. And then, just as quickly, they were very public. If you had a phone, you had to have this app.

Anna’s job was to scour social media and the news for controversial events, and then take a stand on them. They had meetings about the kind of company they wanted to be. Everyone had a turn to speak.

“I’m not gay, but I think gay people should be able to do gay stuff.” Everyone clapped.

“I’m not black, but black people should have rights.” Everyone clapped for that, too.

“And women! I don’t know much about them, but I know they go through stuff.”

They all took turns saying things and clapping in agreement.

When Anna saw a shooting in the news, she made sure everyone knew the app didn’t like that. She created graphics and snarky remarks. People liked and shared her content, and that was good for the app, too.

Sometimes people asked her what the app did.

“It’s innovative. It’s like Uber, but without the cars and drivers. It’s a time-saver. It’s life-affirming. The UX is top-notch.”

“That sounds amazing,” they would say. Everyone agreed that Anna was doing a great job. She was proud of what she was doing. She was spreading awareness.

One day, the app hired a brown woman named Bee. Bee was her nickname. The problem was that no one knew what type of brown Bee was. Was it rude to ask? They weren’t supposed to ask, right? Bee was added to the company About page and everyone agreed that they had done a good job in hiring her.

After a week in, Bee asked Anna about something she had posted about racism. Anna was terrified.

“I received a weird email after you posted about that,” Bee said. “Have you ever received anything like that?”

Anna felt a little more relaxed.

“Sometimes people online say mean things. Is that what you’re worried about? It’s okay. They’re on the wrong side of history.”

“I’m not really worried about people saying mean things online. I can handle that.”
