7 Traits Of Greatness

We are all born with the potential for greatness. There are no exceptions.
You and I can build lives of greatness. These principles and characteristics are for anyone who wants to strive for greatness and be their best. These qualities though unique are not in the DNA. They are simply human traits that anybody can choose to exercise and develop. Great people choose to display these traits consistently over time. Greatness is an open game, available to anyone. Greatness starts here and now.


Modesty is the highest elegance. — Coco Chanel

True greatness is modest. It is a false greatness that magnifies its own powers and disparages the strength of opposing forces. There is no way to maintain a wise and proper conduct so certain, as to form a modest estimate of our own character. We must not think extravagantly well of ourselves but form an estimate that is reasonable and in accordance with fact. It is said that greatness of mind is inconsistent with vanity. This is true modesty.

Seize the opportunity. Seize the moment.

The greatest revolutions that have taken place, the most splendid victories that have been won, and the most permanent conquests that have been achieved, have all depended upon a judicious estimate and critical application of time. A few minutes lost or improved may decide the complexion of our whole destiny.

A sculptor once showed a visitor his studio. It was full of sculptures. One was very curious. The face was concealed by being covered with hair, and there were wings to each foot. A spectator asked him its name. ‘Opportunity’ was his reply. He asked him why the face was hidden. He said, “Because humans seldom know it when it comes to them.” The spectator asked, “Why does it have wings upon its feet?” He said, “Because it is soon gone, and once gone it cannot be overtaken.”

Opportunity, when once lost, can never be recalled. The spark, that one single drop would have quenched at the outset, may, if neglected, spread fire around till it wraps a whole city in one wasting conflagration.

Adaptability to change defines wisdom.

Adaptability is being able to adjust to any situation at any given time. The most successful people are those who accept and adapt to constant change.

William Wrigley Jr. was a soap manufacturer who offered cans of baking powder as an extra incentive to vendors to stock his soaps. Baking powder became more popular than soap. William switched to baking powder business. Later on, William offered chewing gum with each can of baking powder. The offer was a big success. Chewing gum was more popular than the product. It was designed to promote and so began the world’s most popular and successful chewing gum business.

Go over, go around or go through but never give up.

Lack of perseverance is one of the reasons most people fail in business and in their personal lives. The perseverance of Charles Goodyear gave us the tyres that enable vehicles to travel at great speed. He spent all of his time and resources working with rubber, trying every imaginable method to improve the quality of the material. He had no money, little knowledge of chemistry, and few resources for experimentation, yet he continued to persevere with his experiments, using trial and error to see what would work. Goodyear spent many years in and out of debtor’s prison and left his family destitute, but his persistent work at developing rubber as a commercial product launched an entire industry.

Life is never well used when it is held dearer than duty.
When the Roman general, Pompey, was warned against the danger of his returning from Egypt to Italy, to meet a new trouble in his own land, his heroic answer was: “It is a small matter that I should move forward and die. It is too great a matter that I should take one step backward and live.”

The great are always willing to be little.

It is humility to think, not that you are less than somebody else, but that you are less than you ought to be. All great people know their business. They know that they know it and are right in their main opinions. They know that they are right in them, only they do not think much of themselves on that account. Arnolfo di Cambio knows he can build a good dome at Florence. Albert Durer writes calmly to one who has found fault with his work, “It cannot be better done”. Sir Isaac Newton knows that he has worked out a problem or two that would have puzzled anybody else. Only they do not expect their fellow-men, therefore, to fall down and worship them. They have a curious under-sense of powerlessness, feeling that the greatness is not in them, but through them.

If you learn self-control, you can master anything.

The main factor behind success is self-control. Self-control is strength. The power of a temperate life is a grand thing, not for its own sake simply, but for the sake of others. It is the germ of great results, the parent of heroisms.
Once, when Socrates was asked what the virtue of a young man was, he said, “To avoid excess in everything.” If this virtue were more common, how much happier the world would be.
