Stunted

Balled fists of my heart
pound at my chest
from the inside.
There is no liberation for
the frustration,
the anger.
The fists pound and then
flatten. They grip
my rib cage:
white-knuckled restraint
Blood pressure builds,
pooling into my fingers
tightening the grip
around calcified bars
surrounding my heart.
No excess of emotion is allowed
To seep through the fingers
or bones that protect my heart.
Is that why we have ribs?
To prevent the hemorrhaging
0f hateful response?
Is it hateful to respond with
arterial spray when provoked
by cuts of unkindness?
The fingers are bloodied
with red-hot words
my heart refuses to
release them to my lips.
They smile, like a
false positive on a test.

Because interpretation is
only skin-deep.
