Corporate Creatives Are Often Not Real Creatives

There is a growing creative scene in the corporate world that I got duped into working in. I consider myself a creative person and I was looking for a career path that would let me utilise my creativity and make a living.

I felt a little bit frustrated in my first “creative” role as there wasn’t much creativity. Whenever I tried to be creative I got stopped and was told to follow the process. That would have been fine, but the process wasn’t good and needed some mixing up.

After looking into roles more, reading some things, and speaking to a few people, I found that the corporate creative scene is just like most scenes — fake.

When you understand what corporate is and what creative is, it’s obvious that there wouldn’t be any real creative jobs. Corporate is data and money — corporate is structure and no risk. Creative is freedom and expression, it’s taking risks and not following the norm.

In order to be creative, you need to be a person who’s not afraid to do their own thing and try something outlandish. That’s the exact opposite that the corporate world wants.

Corporate people fear different and that’s why they’re corporate people. They want to be surrounded by like-minded people who’re just like them.

Corporations need to stop advertising that they want creative people who can do things differently when that’s not what they want. If you want someone to follow the rules, that’s fine, just say that and you’ll get the right person.

I see so many job adverts like this, and then you get to the interview stage and it’s clear they don’t want anyone to be different. They’re grey people who’re scared of different. They think that things should be done 1 way and 1 way only.

Very few things are black and white, but your boss will have you thinking otherwise.
