Taking a stand

Everyone is different but we are all human. We all have capacities to love, to feel hurt, to achieve things, to fail, to be active, to be lazy, to enjoy music, to revel in solitude. Each individual has fundamental beliefs and values unique to them. Yes, we have organised religion and faith groups, I myself go to church every Sunday with people I share beliefs with. But we are all individuals and the values we were raised with or develop with life experiences can be different.

Everyone has things they will take a stand for. Things that they are passionate about and get excited or emotional about. Or so they should.

I’m not talking politics but that’s conveniently relevant. I’m talking about life, generally. When you see something happen, when someone is struggling with something, when you feel a certain way — you do something. Or so you should.

Sometimes this can be difficult, you don’t want to take a stand and then stand on someone’s toes. You don’t want to take a stand but then realise your argument or point of view is faulty or flawed. You don’t want to believe in something and then gain a new perspective, change your mind and be seen as flaky or indecisive. But you know what, taking a stand, even just the simple act of stepping out and saying what you believe in and why, is everything.

Because complacency isn’t cool. And giving a damn is.

So whatever it is, search your heart, find your values, see what excites you, see what makes you start talking and then can’t shut up about. And do that, support that, live that.
