Are Movie Theaters at Risk?

There is a growing concern in the filmmaking community that the center of viewership, the movie theater, will eventually become extinct. This is a fear that Steven Spielberg has as more noted directors such as Alfonso Cuarón and Martin Scorcese turn to streaming services like Netflix to distribute their films. Spielberg’s point of view is interesting yet he does not think of the desires of the viewer. That is why it is important to have people who are not in the industry share their viewpoint, such as Megan who writes about a number of subjects on her blog Dead on Arrival, such as a healthy lifestyle and her work in horror makeup. However, she also is incredibly passionate about film and film viewership as evident by her blog “Why I Despise Movie Theaters.” Throughout the blog we understand who she is through her tone and voice. With her phrasing, figures of speech and punctuation the reader understands that this is a casual young woman with a frank sense of humor and a biting tongue.

The post supplies a number of reasons why Meg “despises” movie theaters. A self-described “cinematic junkie,” Meg believes in the intention behind the movie theater. Yet she hates movie theaters purely because other people ruin the experience for her. While others have pleasant experiences when watching films in a social gathering, Meg through her colorful word choice and diction, expresses her severe distaste and believes that the best way to view a film is alone at home and far from any couples or crying babies.

Her sense of humor is evident as the very first sentence uses the phrase “tickles my fancy.” This is part of her technique to seem more relatable and while not a curse word, she also uses the words “jerk butt” to describe people who talk during movies. This expresses her strong, outraged opinion on movie theaters while also keeping things lighthearted. Another instance is when she says “and if you’re that couple just know that I hate you” and “teenagers pretty much ruin everything.” She reveals her irritation through these word choices and phrases, however we are not meant to take it so seriously. Even when discussing bad experiences she has had in the past, she uses personal anecdotes and fake conversations to express her humor in a sarcastic manner.

Another technique she uses to show her voice is through the use of punctuation. She uses parentheses numerous times as a way to reveal more sides of her personality and connect with the reader, similarly to breaking the fourth wall in a film when the character talks to the audience. Case in point when she says “I dragged my fat bum off the couch and ventured off to see Alien Covenant (which scared the crap out of me).” Not only does she use colorful word choices, but it also makes her seem more relatable. We can connect with the author through her humor and honesty. At times she uses a combination of strong punctation choices. At times, Meg will put words in bold to emphasize her opinion and to further engage us. She later states, “I’m going to be real with you (because we’re friends), I hate movie theaters.” Throughout this blog she is consistently honest and humorous while also supplying a very strong, critical statement.

Through her word choice and use of punctuation, the reader understands that even with her humor and biting tongue, she remains completely pessimistic and stubborn about movie theaters. Meg ends her blog with “Bottom line–nobody really gives a shit. Humans are the worst and the majority of them flock to movie theaters.” This reveals her feelings of hostility and makes this blog more informal. But she tries to regain this humor and relatability back towards the conclusion of her blog as she discusses outdoor movie theaters; “But since I hate sand, we all know that’ll never be something I’ll participate in…” However this phrase with its use of bolding proves that despite her trying to remain lighthearted, she is adamant about her hatred towards movie theaters.
