Romeo and Juliet

The Worlds Attitude on love

Throughout the world, eight billion people have their perspectives, views, and attitudes on the idea and feeling of love. Love is seen in many different ways by everyone. Like attitude, love is displayed in different ways as well. Every human desires a soulmate who the holds the specific type of love directed towards them. Romeo and Juliet displayed an extreme case of love. The lovers knew each other for a full three days, and a tremendous amount of love and affection was displayed between the two in that short amount of time. The drama between Romeo and Juliet is passionate and heartbreaking. Shakespeare created many different characters in this play that displayed many different attitudes of this very complicated idea, Love.

One character that shows a tremendous amount of love is Juliet. Juliet’s attitude towards love is shown when she fakes her death to be with Romeo instead of Paris. Her attitude towards love is shown when she drinks the sleep potion to be with Romeo instead of listening to lord capulet and marrying Paris. Drinking this potion could have been fatal. She did not know whether if this would work or not, or if it could have killed her. Juliet said “What if the mixture does not work at all? Shall I be married then tomorrow morning? No, no, this shall forbid it; thou there. What if it is a poison which the Friar subtly hath ministered to have me dead, lest in this marriage he should be dishonored, because of he marriage me before to Romeo?”(IV.iii.21–27). What she is saying here is she does not know if this sleeping potion will even work, and if it does not she will have to marry Paris in the morning. Another way Juliet shows her attitude towards love is when she kills herself to be with Romeo. This shows her love because when she wakes up in her tomb seeing Romeo dead from the poison. Without considering her options, she reaches for Romeo’s dagger and takes her life. She could not imagine life without him, so she decided to be with him forever. Juliet ends her life to be with Romeo; similarly, Romeo does the same for his mate.A final way Juliet’s attitude is shown is when she finds out Romeo had killed her cousin Tybalt. Vague These actions show her attitude towards love because, she was not mad at all when she had heard the news. Keep in mind Romeo and Juliet had gotten married earlier that day, and that is why Romeo and Tybalt had gotten into a fight. Normally someone would be upset or a little angry at someone who had just killed their cousin. This was not the case for Juliet. She was worried about Romeo being injured rather than even worrying about her cousin. Juliet’s attitude towards love is very powerful and moving.

A second character that demonstrates a powerful attitude towards love is Romeo. A great way to describe Romeo’s attitude is pure, precious and passionate. The first notable reason that Romeo’s love is pure is when he takes his life for Juliet in the tomb. This shows pure love because Romeo would take his life for his lovers. Romeo says this while he is about to drink it “Here’s to my love! (Drinks.) O, true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss, I die.” (V.iii.100–120). He drinks this because he can not stand the thought of living in a world without his one true love. Willing to do so, Romeo goes to the extreme for his love. A second way Romeo demonstrates his love is when he sneaks back into the capulet’s garden to see Juliet. This shows his love is passionate because at this point he had only known Juliet for a couple of hours and he was willing to get caught just to see her. If he had gotten caught in the garden, it would have been big trouble for him, and to do that after only knowing the girl for a little while is very affectionate. One final reason why Romeo’s love is pure is when he was in love with Rosiline, and she did not love him back. This shows his attitude because he will continually show love and affection to someone even if they do not show it back. You have to be very loving to show love and get nothing in return constantly. Determination in a relationship is a trait many people like. Romeo’s attitude towards love is pure and passionate which is why I think Juliet fell for him so quickly.

A final character that signifies love is Lord Capulet. His love is more serious, and fatherly than anything. He does not care about the affectionate part of the relationship but rather her well being in the future. My first example for lord capulet is when he arranges and plans the whole wedding for Juliet and Paris. This shows that he cares very much about his daughter and wants the best for her on her special day. Fathers want the best for their daughters, and he believes that he is doing that by having this wedding. Little does he know that this is the exact opposite of what she wants. Another example for Lord Capulet is when he arranges the marriage between Paris and Juliet. Lord Capulet arranged this marriage because Paris comes from a very wealthy family. This ensures that Juliet will be cared for properly and will be wealthy as well. On the other hand, this is not what Juliet wants in the slightest. She thinks that Paris is a nice guy she just does not want to marry him. Therefore, she is not too happy with this decision. She wants to spend her life with Romeo, and that is what she intends to do. Lord Capulet symbolizes what every daughter should want, a caring and serious father.

To sum up, Romeo and Juliet is a story full of different views of love. Some are passionate and determined. While others are monetary and serious. Even though they are so different, the story revolves around the single concept of love. Shakespeare paints the picture that everyone needs love to survive, and that people are willing to go to the extreme for it. Love is life changing, however Shakespeare shows that It is vital to know how to control it, so you do not become overwhelmed. It is important to understand the different views of love so we do not end up as overwhelmed as Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will forever be a controversial drama of the powerful theme of love.
