NBA trades this season are unlike any other

The 2019 NBA Season is nearing its halfway point and there have already been groundbreaking stories from broken records to historic performances. However throughout the entirety of the season one topic that has remained constant and relevant are the trade rumors.

The NBA trade deadline is approaching fast and teams have until February 7th to complete any last minute trades. The two trade stories that have been flooding the NBA are the Knicks trading Kristap Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks, and the possible trade of Anthony Davis.

The New York Knicks are sending Kristap Porzingis, Courtney Lee, Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Mavericks for Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, and a 2021 and 2023 first round draft pick. Porzingis confirms his trade to Dallas by sending this tweet from his personal twitter account.

The reason this trade season is unlike any other is because this has been the first time that the players are publicly requesting trades, and telling the media where they intend to go. This sounds like good news right? The players are the ones playing so why shouldn’t they be able to pick where they want to play? NBA analysist and Hall of Famer Charles Barkley explains why it shouldn’t be allowed.

This all started in the beginning of the season when Lebron James publicly expressed his interest in playing with Anthony Davis.

After the Lakers and Pelicans game last week, Davis and James reportedly met for dinner and a couple days later Davis publicly requested a trade. In his announcement, Davis stated that he has no intentions of signing anywhere other than with the Los Angles Lakers, and if he is traded to another team it will only be for a 1 year deal before moving to LA in free agency. Davis was fined 50,000 dollars for violating the NBA anti-tampering rules. Although James only answered a question he was asked, James was also warned about the anti-tampering rules.

Anthony Davis is obviously not the first person to request a trade, but it is apparent that superstars are gaining more power when it comes to where they play, beginning with Lebron James going to the heat and creating the first “superteam” featuring Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and Ray Allen. Kawhi Leonard requested a trade from San Antonio, Kevin Durant left Oklahoma for the Warriors, and Kyrie Irving requested out of Cleveland. With all the drama around the league this year it will be interesting to see how everything unfolds for Davis and other superstars around the league.
