Kindness on the roadway

We all know that the world is full of kind-hearted people, but how far does generosity extend between total strangers? I unexpectedly experienced the latter on the receiving end this evening as I…

My Encounter With the King

A six-word memoir

Have you ever heard of the Six-Word Memoir project? I stumbled upon this global phenomenon while researching notes from my copyediting class. The founder of Smith Magazine, Larry Smith, had once heard a legend that Ernest Hemingway won a bet by writing a story in six words. For sale: baby shoes. Never worn. Smith then challenged his community to describe their lives in six words, and as a result of this invitation, hundreds of thousands of people worldwide have shared their own six-word life stories.

I’ve decided to take on this challenge, so here it goes.

The end.

Haha; just kidding. I’d love to leave it at that, but then that would make me like the writers of famous television series who leave you hanging with your mouth wide open at the end of the season, a ton of questions rambling through your head. What happens next?

So let me elaborate.

Once upon a time, the Creator of the universe had this astonishing thought that He would birth this amazing, breathtaking little girl who would join Him in transforming the world. Yep, that’s correct. I was once just a thought in my Heavenly Father’s mind, and the thoughts He had for me were marvelous and good.

Unfortunately, life got in the way of His glorious plans, and because everyone Father creates has the option to choose to do great and mighty things for our world or destructive and evil things, certain people who entered my life as a child made bad choices. My heart and soul were battered, and my body used until I was so beaten down I no longer wanted to live.

In quiet desperation, I sought to end my life many times, the first being when I was just 10 years old. The abuse and misuse continued throughout college and early adulthood as I lived out the false identity I had acquired. I believed myself to be valueless.

One day, I encountered The King of the universe. He sat me down and told me His plan for me from the very beginning. He recounted an extraordinary story about a precious jewel (me) that was meant to shine and destined for greatness. He captured my attention with tales of all the things I was ordained to create for the world that would add to its beauty. And He told me of how He gave his most treasured possession, His son, to take the place of every bad thing that ever happened to me or anybody else in this world if we would only believe in the gift of His son.

“Do you want Him, daughter?” He inquired, his eyes spilling over with love.

“Yes! Yes, Father. I do want your gift! I BELIEVE!”

Thus began my journey of living as a Redeemed Daughter of The King. My journey is not easy, and the old ways continually resurface to beat me down with their lies. When that happens, I always look up into the magnificent sky and see His smile in the beams of sunlight that splash my face with the warmth of His love. To this day, I continue to press onward, fulfilling the destiny planned for me ages and ages ago.

The End.

Now it’s your turn. In six words, tell me your life story. Come on, be brave. You can do it!
