Time and time again, designers reference historical styles and push them into modern trends. Throughout history we have seen many changes in clothing, from the color, to the material used to make it. The evolution of fashion dates back to several hundred years and as our attitude and culture change, fashion comes along with it.

Let’s go back to the 1900s. Fashion in the 1900’s was impacted greatly by World War I and II.

Fashion during 1900–1910s:

→ S shape figure.

→ Skirts were still that long that they were brushing the floor, including day dresses.

→ The key trends were La Belle Époque and Gibson Girl look

→ Women still changed clothing several times a day.

→ Hats with feather and fruits were preffered.

La Belle Epoque

It was an epoch of beautiful clothes and the peak of luxury living for a select few — the very rich and the very privileged through birth

Charles Dana Gibson portrayed the ideals of a modern woman to be strong, independent and well educated. The Gibson Girl’ illustrations were very popular amongst the public and she inspired young women to get rid of their corsets. She changed the ideals of fashion and the Gibson girls were shown to be quite tall and slender without being too voluptuous, unlike the early 19th century women.

Fashion during 1910–1920:

This period had great designers like Charles Fredrick Worth(used the word couture for the first time), Fortuny, Paul Poiret, Jeanne Lanvin, Jeanne Paquin and also the beginning of the world-renowned lady Gabriel Chanel the founder of the yet luxury brand Chanel. (left to right)
