The Ladder Assignment 1

The Ladder crowdsources innovation on the UN Global Goals like climate action, equality and poverty. This means anyone who wants to contribute can help solve a critical issue for a community, non-profit or social enterprise aligned to the global goals, through our 6 week public design sprint facilitated by volunteers like me.

My name is Selina and I’m from Dublin. I’m training with The Ladder to become a professional social innovation facilitator and trainer with design sprint.

We will approach this problem by way of a design sprint. A design sprint is a methodical process to facilitate innovation and solve problems. Originally devised by Jake Knapp of Google Ventures, a design sprint roughly follows a set of phases, and there are a multitude of tools which can be used throughout each phase. The phases are as follows:

Map, sketch, decide, prototype, test

A sprint is often done in one week, from Monday to Friday, with a phase for each day. Our team will undertake the same process, but spread out over 6 weeks. We will meet once a week, and will tackle roughly one phase each week.

STEP 1

We have just completed the first step: Map, which is where we come to understand the problem, and map out the key stakeholders, or “actors”, their goals, and the steps they will take to achieve their goals/overcome their problems.

In order to do this, we first defined our vision:

Stronger communities that can respond to gun violence and get help when it is needed with tools and resources always available.

and we defined our 6/6/6 goals, which are 6 week, 6month and 6 year goals.

We defined the biggest risks with this project is that those engaged with the service are targetted with violence, if data is leaked.

The biggest challenge will be getting the members of the community to trust the reporting platform we provide, and to actually use it.

I think we will also encounter challenges of having adequate resources provided by the Gardai to respond to reports. I also think that false reporting might cause problems to the system.

One of the actors we identified in the sprint is a member of the community. This is how they will engage with our solution

So to summarise step one, we came up with the following Sprint Statement:
