My Love-Hate Relationship with Social Media

I love social media. In fact, sometimes too much. When I have articles due, I’ll start researching a topic and find myself clicking over to my Facebook, Email, or Medium tab. Close tabs and get your focus.

As an ex-pat, social media is a great way for me to keep in touch with friends from my native land. I get to watch their kids grow up in pics and wonder where the time went. I can call my aunt on Messenger and see what her cat has been up to and what new crafts she is working on. I keep in touch with my mom on Whatsapp because my mom will never get on Facebook.

Social media takes away a lot of the non-verbal cues we use when speaking face to face and can make communication more meaningful for the neurodiverse community. Here is an excellent perspective on this:

Without social media, the distance between my family, friends, and me would be a giant chasm.

While we love social media, it is also a love-hate relationship for some. We’ll “take a break” from the relationship when it gets too much, and then get back together.

I take a break when all the pics of my friend’s kids and the Hawaiian vacations turn into Facebook rants. in 2020, I almost closed my account for good! (But, let’s be real, I can’t because I’m addicted). My feed turned into: Elections arguments, viruses, masks, mandates, and catastrophes. Wait, this is where I go to get away from the news and stress. General statements were being made that if you love humanity, you must do X, Y, Z. If you don’t share my opinion then go to H, E, L, — ok you get me.
